Background of the Study
Human trafficking remains a critical issue with far-reaching economic and social implications. In Nkanu East, Enugu State, the phenomenon of human trafficking not only violates human rights but also adversely affects the local economy. Trafficking disrupts labor markets, undermines legitimate business practices, and perpetuates cycles of poverty and exploitation (Chukwu, 2023). Victims of human trafficking are often exploited for forced labor or commercial sexual exploitation, which diminishes their ability to contribute productively to society. The illicit nature of human trafficking further hampers economic growth by siphoning resources away from legitimate industries and creating an underground economy that is difficult to regulate (Okafor, 2024). Furthermore, communities affected by human trafficking often face stigmatization and reduced social cohesion, further complicating economic recovery efforts (Ikechukwu, 2025). The study explores the intricate relationship between human trafficking and its economic implications in Nkanu East, examining how the exploitation of vulnerable populations impedes sustainable development. By investigating these dynamics, the research seeks to propose targeted interventions that can address both the human rights abuses and the economic detriments associated with trafficking.
Statement of the Problem
Nkanu East Local Government Area is experiencing severe economic repercussions as a result of human trafficking. The clandestine nature of trafficking operations has led to significant losses in human capital and undermined legitimate economic activities (Chukwu, 2023). The exploitation of vulnerable individuals not only results in human suffering but also disrupts local labor markets and reduces productivity. Despite governmental efforts to combat trafficking, the region continues to struggle with inadequate law enforcement, corruption, and a lack of comprehensive support for victims (Okafor, 2024). These factors contribute to persistent economic instability and social disintegration, necessitating an in-depth investigation into the economic implications of human trafficking in the area (Ikechukwu, 2025). This study aims to identify the mechanisms through which trafficking affects economic development and to recommend effective policy measures for intervention.
